This paper presents an effective algorithm to design probe-fed rectangular microstrip antenna conformed on cylindrical structures. A homemade CAD package was developed using this algorithm, making the design and analysis of this kind of antenna easy. The expressions for the main antenna characteristics were found using the cavity model. After obtaining the synthesis expressions, the design process is described for an antenna operating at the L1 GPS frequency (1575.42 MHz). Input impedance, radiation patterns and axial ratio were computed. Analyses of the sensibility of the antenna parameters with the substrate permittivity are presented. Finally, experimental results are shown and compared with the theoretical predictions. Two prototypes were necessary to obtain an optimized geometry.
