Abstract

Mercury is today the least known terrestrial planet of the Solar System – however the first flyby of MESSENGER space-probe (NASA) earlier this year started the decade dedicated to its investigation, ending with the planned BepiColombo mission (ESA). One of the aims of this scientific effort is to improve our current knowledge of the planetary internal structure with observation of Mercury’s gravity field together with its surface topography. In the present study we have focused on the following questions: What are the expected amplitudes of the gravity-topographic signal generated by the present-day interior dynamics of the mantle and what are its implications for the gravimetric inversion? Can we get information about properties of the mantle and the core-mantle boundary (CMB) and how strong is the influence of this signal on the inversion for lateral variations of crust?
