Abstract

An advanced mathematical methodology for efficient Tikhonov-type inversion of MetOp nadir sounder observations is proposed. Key issues such as optimal regularization matrix and parameter selection, bound constraints, discretization, or multi profile regularization are discussed. Furthermore it allows a consistent and systematic verification of retrieval results. This contribution reviews our experience with atmospheric sounding inverse problems, nb. Envisat, and gives an outlook on the proposed further development and application to MetOp.
