Todays measurement techniques and especially laser based optical measurement techniques are widely used by automobile manufacturers for investigation of external flows around the vehicle bodies as well as for internal flows in passenger compartments and engines. In spite of the fact, that probe measurements and pointwise laser anemometry is still frequently used, this paper is focusing on planar velocimetry which has rapidly developed over the past decade. Therefore, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Doppler Global Velocimetry (DGV) are described in more detail in the following.
