A comparative study on conventional and unconventional Bobbin Tool friction stir welded joints made from 6056 aluminum alloy has been performed. The effect of aging condition (pre- and post-welding T78 tempering, respectively) and welding technology on fatigue crack growth has been evaluated. The effect of aging condition is dominating, as residual stresses are relieved during post-weld aging for both friction stir welding technologies. The remaining effect of welding technology is only minor.
