One major objective of EUROPIV was to provide a selection of PIV records obtained in different flow situatins, representative of the problems to tackle with this method (different image quality, particle concentration, out of plane velocity component, turbulence intensity, vortex intensity ...), and compare the results of the analysis of these records by the different methods developed by the different teams. Apart from the various methods usable for analysis, necessary treatments have to be performed on the raw data to build useable information. Algorithms are needed for peak detection and location, to eliminate spurious vectors, to fill up holes in the measured velocity field, to smooth measurement noise in the data, to extract complementary information such as streamlines, vorticity and divergence, to present the data and their interval of confidence in an easy to understand way. An important part of the work done by the EUROPIV consortium was to establish and administrate the Database required to test the aforementioned algorithms.
