Abstract

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a new technique, which allows the recording of a complete velocity field in a plane of the flow within microseconds. The PIV technique itself has been developed during the past 15 years. It is now in such a stage that it can be applied as well to problems of fundamental as well to those of industrial interest. In order to understand the unique features and to assess the problems involved with its application, the physical fundaments of PIV, the seeding and the illumination of flows, the recording and evaluation process will be reviewed in some detail. Finally some examples of the application of PIV at aerodynamic research in wind tunnels will be given.
