Kurzfassung
Abstract: More and more car manufactures present car concepts providing advanced driver assistance systems and the capability to drive partially or highly automated in specific situations. Following the roadmaps of (inter)national committees, highly automated driving will be available in the next decade, but the driver will still be used as a fall-back, to manage situations the automation is not capable to handle. In this study 33 drivers drove in a highly automated vehicle. On the same time they performed a demanding secondary task on a nomadic device. A takeover request due to a roadwork was presented to the driver via 3 different interaction concepts that partially utilize the nomadic device as an additional in-vehicle display. The reaction time, acceptance and trajectory were measured. The results depict a takeover method that proofs to be safe for a usage in automated vehicles in situations where the driver uses nomadic devices like tablet-pc’s, smartphones or notebooks. This method utilized multiple escalating and situation-dependent messages that were shown on the display of the nomadic device along with correlating outputs in the build-in head-down display of the vehicle.
