Kurzfassung
This bachelor thesis describes the design of a seed cultivation mat (SCM) for a mobile deployable plant cultivation unit (MEPA) using the nutrient-film technique (NFT) as a hydroponic irrigation method. Within the scope of the work, a seed mat is manufactured on a smaller scale and tested in a series of experiments. The aim of this work is to design a system that is suitable for plant cultivation within the MEPA project. The design is done after establishing requirements based on the MEPA system, the chosen irrigation method and the plant specific characteristics. A channel layout can then be developed, a material selection made and a manufacturing process chosen. In addition, the interfaces to the plants and the MEPA supply unit are taken into account in the design. Based on the developed seed cultivation mat, a model was made to check the functional principle of the mat. A culture of lettuce plants was successfully grown in a laboratory set-up over a test period of four weeks. Based on the test observations, the seed cultivation mat with the designed channel layout and material selection is considered suitable for the MEPA system. The designed seed cultivation mat can serve as a basis for further developments of this system within the MEPA project.
