Kurzfassung
Sandwich structure is one of the lightweight designs that can replace steel as the primary material used for decades in the automotive industry due to its good performance and lightweight. At the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the institute "Vehicle Concept" is currently developing the sandwich structure for their lightweight concept vehicles, including its continuous manufacturing concept for the future mass-production. In the past two years, several concept vehicles in sandwich construction have been developed by students as part of their master's thesis. However, the vehicle's sandwich structure parts, especially the subfloor plate as the main foundation of a vehicle, have not been validated yet. Without any validation, the reliability of the vehicle's sandwich structure parts remains unknown. For this reason, this master thesis aims to validate the subfloor plate of a concept vehicle by conducting a Finite Element Method (FEM) calculation with some predefined driving load cases. It can then be considered that a sandwich panel has enough mechanical strength for the driving loads if the FEM calculation result shows no critical stress, which indicates damage on the sandwich panel. Moreover, inserts which have essential roles in stabilizing the sandwich structure and mounting other components to the sandwich panel, are also the main objective of this thesis. In this thesis, series of experiments are carried out, both by physical pull-out test and by calculating with FEM analysis, to find out the most suitable insert for the vehicle’s subfloor.
