Abstract

On-demand transportation attracts much interests due to its benefit of cost-efficiency and flexibility. This paper focuses on a dial-a-ride problem (DARP) with autonomous vehicles in the on-demand transportation system integrated with conventional public transport using an improved ant colony algorithm (ACO). The dynamic DARP, which has time and vehicle capacity constraints which are handled by the ACO with penalties on infeasible routes, differs from other DARPs on the aspect of time constraints and the manner to select next stops in routing algorithms. By applying the ACO, the system can fast and correctly returns feasible routes to both autonomous vehicles and passengers. After the experiment conducted in Hamburg, it is found that the ACO works suitably as expectation such that the algorithm can fully support the on-demand system.
