Abstract

The work is based on a current research project called STROMbegleitung (STROM Accompanied research) which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The first part of our overview looks at current public funding activities and presents the key technologies of future battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or range extended (REEV) vehicles. Governmental funding schemes play a substantial role for the deployment of electric vehicles (EV) and to reach a market leadership position. Countries with a strong automotive sector are eager to take the lead when it comes to research and development of key vehicle technologies. In this paper we present different funding schemes in Germany and the United States and discuss their main focus. In the second part of the overview we introduce the most important technologies for electric vehicles. These technologies are being improved in order to raise the efficiency of EVs in the future. We show that during the past years the United States has developed into the largest EV market in terms of vehicle sales. Besides strong purchase incentives the U.S. government is promoting strongly its EV industry. In Germany funding is focused on projects in which vehicle concepts and components are developed and demonstrated.
