Abstract

The paper describes a modeling methodology using finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate the influence of preloads on the impact damage resistance of composite panels. A continuum damage mechanics material model is coded within the framework of the software package Abaqus FEA to model in-ply damage development and failure. Strength reduction due to delamination damage is captured by modeling the laminate as a stack of multi-layered shell elements connected by cohesive element layers that allow separation into sublaminates. The impact process on pre-stressed panels is modeled utilizing coupled implicit/explicit solving techniques. The modeling methodology is applied to simulate the impact of a blunt impactor on pre-stressed and unstressed panels. Comparison of simulation results against preliminary results from impact tests on an unloaded and a preloaded panel show that the model can depict the trends of the material behavior observed in the experimental tests.
