Abstract

In 2006 a Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Group has been established to develop electrolytic production routes for titanium matrix composites based on molten salt electrolyses and integrated titanium extraction. The collaborative project of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and RWTH Aachen University has a duration of five years. The initial target was to develop sub-processes and to combine them in such a way, that titanium matrix composites can be produced directly from titanium dioxide and ceramic fibres. This Paper provides an overview of the project with special focus on technical boundary conditions and the project targets reached. Challenges and opportunities of the project are discussed.
