The thin disk laser concept opens the possibility to demonstrate high power, high efficiency and good beam quality, simultaneously. With an optimized setup more than 500 W of nearly diffraction limited power were demonstrated using one disk; with two disks, nearly one kilowatt with excellent beam quality was achieved. Measurements of the phase distortions, the thermal lensing behavior and the spatial mode structures were combined with thermo-mechanical modeling of the thin disk and with numerical simulations of the field distribution within the resonator. These results are the basis of further increasing power, efficiency and stability in fundamental mode operation.
