Abstract

On the basis of Europa’s measured density, quadrupole gravitational coefficients, and shape, it is inferred that the satellite is fully differentiated into a metallic core, silicate mantle, and outer water ice/liquid shell. From measurements of the induced magnetic field due to currents in Europa driven by time variations in the Jovian-directed component of the planet’s magnetic field, it is inferred that there is a global subsurface liquid water ocean within Europa’s outer shell. Geological features are consistent with the existence of a liquid water ocean beneath Europa’s icy surface. This chapter reviews the evidence for the internal structure model of Europa, describes how the structural model is obtained, explains how the existence of the subsurface liquid water ocean is inferred, and discusses the possible composition of Europa’s metallic core, silicate mantle, and subsurface ocean.
