Enquêtes allemandes: l’intégration des transports dans les entreprises

Abstract

Massive changes of the production system characterize the economic development of the last decades inducing an increased transport demand because of the re-organization of value chains. While there is a consensus about the general relationship between the modification of the system and its impact on transport, it has not been clarified until now what this means on the level of the firm. Which firms are particularly affected by these changes and what does this mean for their ‘new’ transport demand? The paper reports about the empirical approach of the German DLR – Institute of Transport Research. By using data of a survey among more than 900 manufacturing companies the article investigates the importance of outsourcing in firms according to several firms’ characteristics as well as the effect of Just-in-Time application on the transport demand of individual firms. Overall the close relationship between disaggregated data and microscopic freight transport models is examined.
