The new time-variant motion cueing algorithm for the DLR dynamic driving simulator.

The motion envelope is the strongest restriction of a moving based simulator’s fidelity. To counter the demanding task of rendering fast and complex driving dynamics and to make full use of the available motion system capabilities a new motion cueing algorithm has been developed at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Based on basic classical washout principals it was designed to reduce specific force shape errors and to enable parameter switching during operation. The drawback is the resulting increase in angular velocities and accelerations. However, test drivers participating at a study focusing on the exploration of motion feedback characteristics rated this effect to be of less importance than the improved specific force signals. An extension of a motion error criterion is defined and first relations between different types of motion errors can be determined with the analysis of the tilt study results. The performance of the new algorithm significantly improves the fidelity of the DLR simulator compared to the formerly used classical washout motion cueing. The used cueing techniques and the performance characteristics of the developed MCA will be presented within this paper.
