Abstract

Within the EU funded project ‘HeliSafe TA’ (2004 – 2007), DLR carried out crash simulations with MADYMO models of a helicopter cockpit mock-up. The models included the pilot seat with integrated energy absorption devices, the pilot (two different sizes: 50% / 95%-ile dummies) and also different safety belt systems. The models were verified by comparison to the respective results from sled tests which were carried out by a project partner (SRS). 15 different injury criteria are considered in the IRSIX calculation which is used in ‘HeliSafe TA’ to judge the injury risk of helicopter occupants. It was shown that for the here examined vertical load cases the IRSIX value is dominated by the maximum lumbar spine forces. Therefore, the optimisation of the characteristic of the seat energy absorbers is of upmost importance. In a sensitivity study, the influence of different belt related parameters – e.g. belt elongation, pretensioner load, TTF (time to fire), load limiter – was investigated. In a further parametric study, the influence of the misalignment of the seat legs (according to the respective FAA seat test regulations) was determined.
