Abstract

Turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection (RBC) - the thermally driven fluid motion between a lower heated horizontal plate and an upper cooled plate - is one of the classical problems in fluid dynamics and is closely related to many astrophysical, geophysical and meteorological problems. To simulate and investigate turbulent RBC in cylindrical and cuboid containers for large Rayleigh numbers we use finite volume approach. In this talk we consider governing equations and discuss the numerical method based on Chorin ansatz, construction of high-order discretization schemes, adaptive mesh generation and von Neumann stability of a general leapfrog-Euler scheme. Dependently on the time left we also discuss the problem of thermal plume extraction in thermal convection and give heat transport analysis based on our simulation data.
