Abstract

Assistance systems have the general aim to support the driver in order to avoid workload and boredom (“comfort systems”) or to counterbalance errors (“safety systems”). A human-centred approach focuses on the needs of the driver to provide the adequate support. In this paper we focus on additional workload which can lead to an increasing probability of driving errors. We examined the effect of different traffic conditions as external stress factors while performing the complex driving manoeuvre “entering the motorway”. Driver workload was measured dynamically in order to examine the relationships between different requirements of the manoeuvre and the dynamic traffic conditions. By these analyses we will derive needs for a human-centred adaptive driving assistance
