Abstract

To attain a satisfactory structural coupling efficiency with mechanical fastening is much more challenging with composite materials than it is for metals due to a lower shear and bearing strength and a dependence on laminate configuration. These properties represent a limiting issue on structural performance of composite structures. Several design approaches are used today in order to enhance the coupling efficiency of mechanically fastened composite joints. This paper presents some research results concerning locally applied titanium reinforcement techniques as well as advanced softening techniques on composite bolted joints
