Abstract
Because road departures are a major cause of fatal crashes, efforts are being made to reduce the number of such crashes. Classical lane keeping systems, which are based on cognitive information processing, use optical, visual or haptic advices to warn the driver. Other strategies are sorts of automated driving. The new approach presented in this paper uses behavioural strategies to prevent road departures. The idea is to elicit reflexes to attract the attention of the driver and initiate a correct reaction. This principle was explored in a simulator at the German Aerospace Center and its functionality could be approved.
