Abstract
Latest developments in hardware and software for laser based flow diagnostics enable the investigation of complex flow phenomena under enclosed, high-temperature and even pressurized conditions. However, the successful application of a velocimetry technique strongly depends on the presence of appropriate light-scattering tracer particles (seeding) in the flow. In the present paper, various types of solid as well as porous particle materials have been investigated regarding their physical properties, namely dimension and shape of primary particles and agglomerates, specific weight or density as well as refractory behavior. A variety of laboratory investigations were carried out to identify seeding materials qualified for PIV applications in transonic, supersonic or reactive flows. Measurements performed with porous particles showed the least amount of velocity lag, which was subsequently confirmed by PIV measurements during an industrial investigation involving supersonic free jets.
