In this paper a new approach towards sustainable land use management in dryland areas is outlined combining the advantages of state-of-the-art hyperspectral information extraction methods with the operationality of large scale Earth observation systems. Such dedicated information layers obtained from quantitative remote sensing shall then be combined with physically based environmental and socioeconomic models to predict future trends in the environmental dynamics of dryland ecosystems. The methodology shall be established using data from airborne imaging spectrometers such as DAIS, HyMap or ARES. In the future the need for hyperspectral satellite systems is seen.
