Abstract

The paper presents a version of the physical theory of diffraction ("true" PTD), which uses exact expressions for surface currents induced by a plane electromagnetic wave on a metallic half plane to simulate electromagnetic scattering from edged bodies. This approach is applied to calculation of radar cross section (RCS) of variously sized thin metallic plates. The RCS curves are compared with reference results obtained by alternative simulation methods, including physical optics (PO), geometric theory of diffraction (GTD), method of equivalent currents (MEC), and the method of moments (MoM). The true PTD is shown to be more accurate than the alternative high-frequency approaches.
