In the past decade particle velocimetry (PIV) has evolved into a reliable flow diagnostic tool for application in both wind and water tunnels. The application of PIV in aerodynamic wind tunnel flows to date has been based on photographic techniques to provide a high spatial resolution as well as to resolve particles with diameters on the order of 1 microsec. One of the primary drawbacks ofthis approach is the long delay between image acquisition and data extraction due to the photographic processing.
