Abstract

Drag, lift, global heat transfer, and recovery temperature are determined on a 70 deg half angle blunted cone which serves as a generic aeroassisted space transfer vehicle (ASTV) configuration. The measurements are performed in a nitrogen free jet flow from continuum to near free molecular flow at stagnation temperatures of T0 &#61 300 K and 500 K and angles of attack alpha &#61 0, 20, and 40 deg. The results show mostly the expected smooth transition from continuum to free molecular values for complete accomodation except the heat transfer and recovery temperature data for T 0 &#61 500 K, which indicate incomplete accomodation especially of the rotational degrees of freedom on the Cu cone at wall temperatures obove 500 K.
