Abstract

A method for measurement of temperatures and densities in rarefied flow is Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy with is applied to reentry simulation of Hermes, Saenger, and the Shuttle in wind tunnels. The strong non-equilibrium of rotational and vibrational temperature is typical of hypersonic wind tunnels due to the rapid expansion in Laval nozzles or free jets. LIF excitation spectra of nitric oxide, NO, were measured in a hot supersonic free jet expansion in the vacuum wind tunnel at Goettingen in a wide density range (10^12 - 10^16 molecules/cm^3). To interpret the experimental results, a computer programm was developed that calculates excitation spectra. By means of the LIF measurements in the free jet flow and in front of a model surface details of the heattransfer can be examined. This is relevant for the gas-surface interaction of reentry vehicles.
