Abstract

The present approach intends to simplify the compressible Navier- Stokes equations. To this end pressure is reduced to speed of sound while the energy equation is replaced by a second, microscopic momentum equation. The interactions between the microscopic and the macroscopic levels of description give new insights into the transport preocesses of heat and kinetic energy. First numerical results show promising results concerning subsonic as well as supersonic flows of different flow configurations. The characteristic parameters are as usual Mach, Reynolds, and Knudsen numbers.
