The modified Advection Upstream Splitting Method, which has been described and investigated for 2D and 3D hypersonic inviscid flows in a previous paper, is further examined with respect to accurate computation of entropy and shear layers in hypersonic flows. The adaptive dissipation, introduced for sufficient numerical damping in cases of adverse grid situation and flow alignment, is scaled appropriately by the cell metric of the underlying grid in order to avoid smearing of boundary and entropy layers. the influence and sensitivity of the adaptive dissipation is studied by the calculation of the inviscid flow around a blunt slender cone at M*ɪ, *ɢ* and by viscous calculations of the 2D ramp test cases III.2 and III.4 of the Antibes Workshop on Hypersonic Flows. Comparisons with the classical van Leer flux vector splitting scheme and the upwind TVD scheme are given. It is shown that the modified AUSM scheme is a suitable and efficient.
