Abstract

The implicit Lower-Upper Symmetric Successive Overrelaxation Scheme (LU-SSOR) will be described in detail. Its stability and damping properties will be investigated for 2D convection- diffusion model problem by Von Neumann analysis. The behaviour of the scheme will be studied for central as well as upwind spatial discretizations of the explicit operator. In order to accelerate the convergence in the case of steady flows, an approach for coupling efficiently the LU-SSOR scheme with the multigrid technique will be proposed. Finally, the results of numerical computations of several 2-D inviscid flows, ranging from Mach 0.1 to 20, will be presented. Furthermore, the performance of the scheme will also be discussed for two different 2-D hypersonic viscous flow problems.
