The analysis of flyover noise data, when taken on piston engine powered propeller-driven aircraft (General Aviation aeroplanes), reveals the occurrence of so far unexplainable additional propeller noise sources. In order to study such detrimental effects on the overall aircraft noise radiation in more detail,tests were performed in the German-Dutch Wind Tunnel (DNW) on a full-scale aircraft powered by a 150-kW piston engine and applying two different propellers respectively. The test results confirmed the presumption that excessive propeller noise radiation is due to nonuniform rotational blade motion. It was found that the drive shaft exhibits a nonuniform angular speed within one revolution with an amplitude corresponding to about 2 % of the average speed. This behaviour, typical for piston engines, is capable to generate tones.
