More than 100 km along the Upper Elbe River in eastern Germany were mapped in February 1991 with the Daedalus AADS 1268 scanner for an inventory of effluents into the river. The detection of effluents was based on their thermal signature, which the scanner records in the wavelength region between 8.5 m to 13 m. Kinetic water temperatures, derived from an atmospheric correction of the data allowed a quantitative mapping of peak effluent temperatures and allows to use the material as a baseline for future surveys. In total 242 effluents were recorded of which 40 % had not been documented by the authorities. A database was established, containing the location and other related information of all effluents as well as hardcopies of all the processed scenes.
