Abstract

A new developed microwave radiometer is used by German authorities since 1993 for quantitative remote sensing of oil layers in the national responsibility areas of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The system consists of a compact line scanner configuration which uses three frequency bands at 18 GHz, 36 GHz and 89 GHz and an upward looking 89 GHz radiometer for sky radiation measurements. A description of the radiometer system is given. Further some experiences collected during the operational use are reported.
