Abstract

One of the major constraints in the design of current spaceborne SAR systems is the availability of downlink data rate. This paper proposes an approach for SAR raw data compression. Data characteristics are estimated block by block using Fuzzy Logic. Thus a block adaptive quantizer can be designed so that a signal to distortion noise ratio (SDNR) of 8.7 dB is achieved for a data rate of 2 bits/sample.
