Abstract

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an important remote sensing instrument for a better understanding of the earth's environment. Due to the high geometric resolution and/or polarimetric, multi-frequency operation, the data rate of spaceborne SAR systems totals several tens of Mbit per second. This data rate has to be decreased. Otherwise, it will be a bottleneck for advanced SAR systems. This paper proposes the optimization and real-time implementation of a fuzzy block adaptive quantizer (FBAQ). The distribution of SAR raw data blocks are analyzed using Fuzzy Logic. These results allow the adaption of a quantizer to the block's data characteristic. Thus, the FBAQ obtains even with a data rate of 2 bits/sample a good performance.
