It will be necessary to strongly reduce the consumption of fossil energy resources in order to prevent changes of the earth climate. Renewable energy will play an important role. Some new investigations confirm the considerable technical technical potential of the local decentralized use of solar energy only, without using imported solar energy. Based on an investigation for the Enquete-Kommission 'Technology Assessment and Evaluation' of the German Parliament, it is shown in which way this technical potential can be mobilized with respect to time, capital and corresponding political activities. Calculations have been made showing the annual production rates of different technologies, the size of markets, and the investments necessary to build up solar energy systems in a given time.
