Abstract

A CW-CO2 laser was used for surface alloying of AISI 1045 steel and alpha-Fe with CrB2 by the powder injection method. CrB2 particles were injected into the molten bath of the substrate. The particles were partially dissolved in the bath, forming a molten layer of Fe-Cr-B-C.The solidification resulted in the formation of iron borides, alpha ferrite, gamma austenite and CrB2 in the case of Armco iron and chromium carbides in the 1045 steel. Hardness was high in both cases. Structure and properties of the layers were studied using X-ray, SEM, and optical microscopy.
