Abstract
The European Rosetta spacecraft is planned to approach comet P/Wirtanen in early 2012, following a series of one Mars and two Earth swing-by maneuvers. Starting at a heliocentric distance of about 4 AU, a global characterization of its nucleus, in- cluding dynamic properties, surface morphology and composition will be performed (Hechler 1994). In addition, the development of cometary activity will be studied up to the 1 AU perihelion passage in summer 2013.
