Abstract

The introduction of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) services in commercial flights considering current regulation requires an interference free situation with ground mobile networks. This paper provides a statistical analysis of the co-channel interference experienced on ground terminals due to GSM picocell operation on-board aircraft in an area with a realistic high aircraft population with such a communication system. It will be shown that either a dedicated frequency allocation or an intelligent interference avoidance system is necessary to ensure non harmful coexistence of aircraft and ground cellular networks.
