Abstract

Previous experimental investigations into the turbulence structure in model-scale, cold air jets have led to a new model of large-scale, coherent (i.e. acoustically non-compact) sources generating jet mixing noise. More recent coherence measuremnts in the near field of a real jet engine and in the far field of cold and hot jets lend further support to the belief that jet noise at small angles to the jet axis is strongly effected by coherent sources in the jet mixing region. This has several consequences regarding the relevant parameters in scaling laws for jet noise and sheds new light on the "cone of silence" and "convective amplitifcation" issues, both effects having been derived from a model of acoustic point sources ("eddies") convected with the sheared flow.
