Abstract
On the basis of a detailed comparison of the various railway management systems a list of functions has been created, to identify the generic functionality of localisation realised by the various systems. Based on this analysis these generic functions can be classified and their technical and dependability requirements can be identified. The classes of application are based on the basic characteristic of the function: they could ensure safety of transportation, operational performance and punctuality. The implementation can be as a safety system, assistance system or information system. Each function is characterised by their set of requirements, but the different classes have a basic set of requirements, too. The approach is to identify on the one hand the requirements of a class and to compare with the individual requirements of a specific functionality realised by an application. Finally the set of requirements for a class are validated and the individual requirements for the application are consistent to the class.
