Future traffic management urgently needs actual and reliable information about the road traffic over wide areas. Airborne and satellite-borne radar sensors with their inherent top-down view and their weather independent operability have the potential to provide such data without the need of additional equipment of traffic vehicles. with Space-based Radar) project. TRAMRAD aims to define a future airborne/space-based sensor system for the wide scale monitoring of road traffic. The project comprises the necessary theoretical and practical investigations, as well as experimental campaigns with airborne instruments. This document summarizes preliminary results achieved during TRAMRAD Phase 1. Although, not all planned work has yet been finished, the reader will get insight into the present status and progress of the work. According with the work packages of the project plan the following chapters are related to the documents entitled • Physical models and analysis of the backscattering behaviour of traffic vehicles • GMTI techniques and analysis • General system requirements
