Abstract

The aerosol dynamics module MADE has been coupled to the general circulation model ECHAM. The new model system ECHAM4/MADE allows for significantly improved representation of aerosols and their related size-dependent physical and chemical processes within global model simulations. In addition to particle mass concentrations, also particle number concentration and size-distribution can be simulated explicitly taking into account detailed aerosol dynamical processes such as coagulation, nucleation, and condensation. To evaluate the results obtained from simulations with the new model system, model data have been compared to numerous aerosol measurements. Besides geographical and seasonal variability of the aerosol components sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, black and organic carbon, mineral dust, and sea salt, also the aerosol liquid water content, particle number concentration, and size-distribution can be investigated. For the first time, the role of aerosol dynamics on global scale for simulation of submicron aerosols can be studied. As a special application, the intercontinental long-range transport of black carbon from road traffic and its contribution to the total atmospheric black carbon burden is investigated.
