Abstract

BIRD is a small, 3 axes stabilized, German LEO satellite [1]. It was launched in October 2001 and is still operating. The design philosophy behind the used magnetic coil system (MCS) will be explained. It includes the used concept of “virtual wheel systems” and the used algorithm for maximising the magnetic torque with a minimised coil current will be presented. A pure magnetic coil based attitude control after a lost of 3 reaction wheels will be briefly illustrated.
