The spray behavior of Jet A-1 gelled with inert Aerosil particles has been investigated using a doublet like-on-like impinging jet atomizer. The characteristics of the atomization process have been visualized by means of the shadowgraph technique under ambient conditions concerning pressure and temperature. A fluid sheet is formed at the impingement point of both gel jets, which is perpendicular oriented to the plane spanned bythe to jets. From this sheet bow-shaped ligaments, fragments or drops are separated periodically and decay further downstream in dependence upon the investigation parameters. A detailed parametric study has been conducted concerning the influence of the exit velocity of the gel jet, the impingement angle between both gel jets as well as the orifice diameter. Also average diameters of the produced droplets have been determined from shadowgraph images.
