Abstract

In order to increase the accuracy of heat flux predictions for thermal protection systems of reentry-vehicles a numerical tool including coupling of fluid and structure has been realised in the IMENS (Integrated Multi-disciplinary dEsigN of hot Structures) project. The unstructured DLR TAU-code and the commercial product ANSYS are used as numerical codes. The resulting tool has been previously validated on a generic ramp model including a gap[1]. The objective of this investigation is the validation of the coupled tool for a generic bodyflap model including leeside flow and strong radiation effects. The influence of perfect gas and nonequilibrium formulations on the numerical solutions has to be quantified. The generic model developed and extensively tested in the arc heated facility L3K of DLR Cologne was designed with variable bodyflap deflection angles. Deflections of 15 and 30° are possible, symmetric as well asymmetric. A sideplate can be placed sealing the flap leeside region in spanwise direction resembling a reentry vehicle configuration such as X-38/CRV (crew return vehicle). Uncoupled solutions as well as coupled solutions have been performed for an angle of attack of 10° and a flap deflection of 15°. Perfect gas and nonequilibrium assumptions have been used. The unstructered mesh for the flow solution contains 1.1 106 points, the quasi-structured mesh for the thermal analysis in the structure 70.000 points.
