Abstract

The present investigation is aimed to improve the efficiency of the design of thermal protection systems (TPS) and hot structures of reentry vehicles. Radiation equilibrium simulations with an unstructured fluid solver (TAU) as well as coupled solutions with a structural finite element solver (ANSYS) taking into account thermal and thermomechanical coupling were performed and compared with experimental data of a generic model of a reentry vehicle nosecap region. Regarding the stagnation point temperature strong coupling effects due to the influence of the material properties was observed. Also the deformation of the structure induced by the temperature and the aerodynamic surface pressure was calculated. The results for temperature and deformation match well with experimental data. Finally, it was shown that the coupled fluid-structure simulation can contribute significantly to increase the efficiency of the design of TPS and hot structures of reentry vehicles.
