Abstract

This report describes the work carried out in Task 3.1 to investigate cockpit safety by parametric studies with MADYMO in which parameters are varied in the DLR cockpit model and their influence on injury criteria are assessed. DLR are concentrating on the vertical crash scenarios HS2 and HS3 and studied in particular the influence of seat absorber characteristics on occupant safety and injuries. A systematic study is reported in which the influence of absorber load-deflection response under constant and increasing loads is modelled and their influence on lumbar loads, lumbar moments and HIC factors is computed. Recommendations are then made for improving the design of the seat absorber to enhance occupant safety.
